You can start simply
A primary care provider can be a starting point if you do not know where to go. You could say: “Something has changed in how I've been feeling, and I'd like to talk about it.” You can ask for an appointment about your mental health.
Bring the details that matter to you
A few notes can help you explain what has changed. Describe when symptoms began, how often they happen and their effect on your life. Bring a list of medications and supplements, and mention relevant health or family history.
- An example from a recent day.
- What has become harder, or what you have started avoiding.
- What you would like help with first.
Make room for your questions
You can ask about the proposed assessment, treatment options, possible benefits and risks, and what happens next. If an explanation is unclear, ask for it in different words.
- What are we trying to understand or rule out?
- What options fit my needs and preferences?
- When should I follow up, and who do I contact if things get worse?
Choose whether you want someone with you
You may want a trusted person to help you take notes or remember the discussion. You can also ask to speak to the clinician on your own. Think about what would make the conversation easier for you.
Leave knowing your next step
Before you leave, check that you understand the plan, who to contact and when to follow up. You can write down one next action. If you have concerns about a treatment suggestion, say so and ask about alternatives.
A place to find your words.
Use these prompts if they help. You can leave any of them blank.
